The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global Environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The incumbent will serve as a Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of UNEP, based in Nairobi, Kenya. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Staff, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
1. Provides support to the Chief of Staff in the discharge of their responsibilities by liaising between the Office and other entities and managing the flow of information between the Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director, UNEP Division Directors, Regional Directors, Heads of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEA) Secretariats and other managers. 2. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, monitors and analyzes programme / project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions. 3. Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources. 4. Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies. 5. Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications. 6. Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations. 7. Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. 8. Performs other duties as required.

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible work experience in project or programme management, administration or a related area is required. Experience in international and multilateral relations is required. Experience in environment and/or sustainable development is desirable. Experience within the United Nations common system or a similar international organisation is desirable. Experience in front-office setting and direct support to senior management in the United Nations or similar international Organization is desirable. Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. NOTE: ''Fluency'' equals a rating of ''fluent'' in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ''Knowledge of'' equals a rating of ''confident'' in two of the four areas.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one (1) year and may be subject to extension. External candidate selected for this position will be granted a fixed-term appointment limited ("FTA-limited") in accordance with section 2.2 (b) of administrative instruction ST/AI/2013/1 on Administration of fixed-term appointments. Renewal of appointment is contingent upon continued existence of mandate and availability of funding. If this position is discontinued, the incumbent will be separated from service. United Nations Secretariat staff members who meet the definition of "internal candidate" in staff rule 4.10 who are selected for this position will be reassigned or transferred to the position, without a lien to their parent position. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
